ON THE NATIONAL LEVEL

The American Poolplayers Association (APA) sanctions a national network of amateur pool leagues known as the APA Pool League.

The APA currently has over 260,000 active members competing in weekly league play, year round. Each team is comprised of between five and eight players with five competing weekly. Those not playing one week may play the following week. Host Locations may have two teams per pool table. Each Host Location should have a minimum of two teams with one team at home each week, while the other is away. Any host location with three or more tables may have in-house activity, meaning all the activity is in their establishment -- no traveling.

All players must be APA members and pay an annual membership fee of $25 Additionally, players pay a weekly team fee to the local administrator, also known as the League Operator. Members receives an APA membership card, and APA membership benefits package mailed directly to their homes.

A division consists of between six and sixteen teams, geographically located so that travel is convenient for the players. Teams compete weekly in three fourteen week sessions (summer, fall and spring). Players may choose to compete in any or all of the sessions. At the end of each session, a predetermined number of the top finishing teams, plus a "wild card," will compete for the title of Division Champion, with trophies awarded to the Division Champions.

The Division Champions from each session become eligible to compete in the International Team Championship, beginning with a Local Team Championship, which is help after the completion of the Spring Session. Trophies and advancement are awarded at this time. A predetermined number of teams from the Local Team Championship advance directly to the International finals. At the International finals, both Open Division and Ladies' Division teams compete for over $1,000,000 in prize money.

The APA International Singles Championship, held in May of each year, is similar in format to the Team Championships. Local Singles tournament competition goes year round and with regional competitions held each September and March. Regional winners compete in Las Vegas in the Spring for more than $500,000 in cash and prizes, with travel and lodging provided for all finalists.
